Fifth Grade Scholars Compete in District Math Meets Competition
NO CALCULATORS! Jasmine wants to buy a new car:
A.) She needs a down payment of $3,000. If she saves $375 each month, how many months will it take her to save the down payment?
B.) Her new car payment will be $288 each month for five years. What is the total cost of Jasmine's new car?
(Answers below).
This is just one math problem fifth grade scholars are solving today at their monthly Math Meets competition. Nine scholars from our nine elementary schools combine to make nine teams. There is one scholar from each school on each team.
Scholars are scored by various criteria that includes, solving the problem, strategy toward finding the answer, a written explanation on steps taken to solve the problem, and working as a team.
As scholars wait for their scores to be calculated, they view video clips of professions that require math. Some videos feature some of our very own Newburgh Goldbacks alumni discussing the use of math in their career. These videos give scholars an opportunity to learn different career options, reflect on if those careers are right for them, and what steps they need to achieve those career paths.
The district Math Meets are led by Mrs. Zoe Matthews, Mrs. Alison Kan. and Mr. Jesse Goodglass with support from Director of Math Mr. Chris Fiorentino.
