草榴社区P-TECH Scholars Participate in Sloop Clearwater鈥檚 Tideline Program
Forty Newburgh Free Academy P-TECH students participated in Clearwater’s Tideline Program along the shores of the Hudson River before having the unique opportunity to board the famous Sloop Clearwater and set sail. On the shore, students caught fish using seine nets, learned how to use a dichotomous fish key to identify fish, studied macro-invertebrates, and practiced knot tying. On board, students assisted in sailing the 190-foot vessel, sang sea shanties, used various navigation tools, and heard stories of the indigenous peoples of the region.
The trip, funded by a grant that Clearwater received, allowed students from grades 9 through 12 to work collaboratively alongside their science and ELA teachers. Scholars returned to the school in the afternoon having a deeper understanding of the history of the river and animals and people which inhabit both the water and the surrounding Hudson Valley.
