South Middle School Scientists Explore Ice Cores
Scientists in Ms. Piccone's Earth Science class studied ice cores this past week to learn more about past climate conditions. Students measured each layer of ice to identify precipitation levels of each year. They also made inferences about past climate events based on material trapped in the ice, such as dust, ash or pollen. This activity was in connection to learning about a groundbreaking achievement by a group of paleontologists who have just finished compiling a 485 million year history of Earth's surface temperature using a variety of evidence that includes ice cores.
